“SILK ROADS CARAVAN” LINKING COP16 TO COP17 ARRIVES IN ULAANBAATAR

The "Silk Roads Caravan", which represents the continuity from COP16 to COP17, arrived in Ulaanbaatar today and entered the COP17 conference site, marking the opening of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. Herders and representatives participating in the process are delivering the "General Declaration of Herders, the Declaration of Women Herders, and the Declaration of Young Herders" to COP17, bringing the voices of pastoralists and nomadic pastoralists to the center of global negotiations. Thus, the process, which symbolizes the continued cooperation from COP16 to COP17 and the voices of herders, officially opened UNCCD COP17 in Ulaanbaatar.

Delegates from 196 countries and the European Union assembled in Ulaanbaatar on August 17, 2026, for the opening of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The two-week summit focuses on scaling up land restoration, drought resilience, and sustainable management across global ecosystems. With land degradation and drought costing the global economy nearly $900 billion annually and directly affecting 3.2 billion people, leaders at COP17 are urging a shift from pledges to implementation.

"The greatest change we want to see from COP17 is a shift from talk to action, from targets to implementation, and from commitments to measurable results," said Mongolian Prime Minister N. Uchral.

Key Agenda Items and Priorities

  • Addressing Ecosystem Degradation: Nearly 77% of host country Mongolia’s land is degraded, reflecting a wider crisis affecting up to 40% of land worldwide.

  • Closing the Financing Gap: Current global investment in land restoration stands at $77 billion annually—far short of the estimated $355 billion needed each year.

  • Focus on Rangelands: Held during the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, the conference highlights rangelands, which cover 54% of Earth's land surface and support 2 billion people, yet face severe degradation risks.

  • Drought Resilience: Over 70 nations have established proactive national drought plans to prepare for climate extremes, up from just three in 2013.

As the first of three Rio Convention COPs convening in 2026, COP17 aims to establish unified global action on climate, land, and biodiversity. The conference runs through August 28.
